    14:00-16:30

On Thursday afternoons we offer friendly Rubber Bridge, which runs from 14:00 – 16:30.  Everyone is welcome, with or without a partner.  We aim to place players with other people of a similar standard, so if it is your first time, please come a little earlier so that we know where to place you.

Tea and biscuits are served mid-way through the session.  Play is not supervised, although sometimes our organisers are available to give limited advice.

The cost is £3 for Alyth members and £4 for non-members with any profits go to synagogue funds.  For further information please telephone either Sheila or Michael on 020 8455 9878.

The Others are Coming: Media representations of migration

    20:00 – 21:30

Today’s media overflows with ‘others’: migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, earthquake survivors, victims of famine and other atrocities.  The media plays a fundamental role in feeding how we imagine migrants and in our failure to recognise them.  How are we invited by contemporary media images and narratives to imagine migrants? How might we imagine them differently? In this talk Shani Orgad will explore these questions focusing on depictions of the current ‘refugee crisis’.

Hosted by Rabbi Mark with Shani Orgad, Alyth member and Associate Professor at the Department of Media and Communications at LSE. Shani is also the Director of the social sciences programme of the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship.
