    The Jew Bill of 1753

    20:00 – 21:30

In eighteenth century England the Jewish community was so acculturated that Rabbi Hart Lyon denounced his congregation for socialising so much with non-Jews that they knew more about Christmas pudding than Matzah. Yet, the Jew Bill, a minor measure to assist wealthy Jews to become British citizens without taking Holy Communion sparked a major anti-Semitic furore.  Jeremy will challenge your concept of Britain as a tolerant nation and discuss how eighteenth century Jews dealt with anti-Semitism in England.

    Gateway to Judaism

    20:00-21:45

Gateway is Alyth’s introduction to Judaism class, taught by Rabbi Josh with Jon Epstein.  Together we approach Judaism as adults, seeking meaning for ourselves in ancient texts and practices.  All are welcome, from those approaching Judaism for the very first time, to those seeking to consolidate the learning of a lifetime.
