Winter Shelter

Volunteers at Alyth Synagogue and Golders Green Parish Church are working together to provide food and shelter for around fifteen of Barnet’s homeless this winter.

Each Tuesday, volunteers work shifts to provide overnight accommodation as well as cooking and serving a hot evening meal and breakfast.

The shelter opened in January and runs through until March. During this time, those using the service will be helped by Homeless Action Barnet to find more long-term accommodation as well as be given advice on health issues and training opportunities.

Peter was one of those at the shelter this year. He comes from Romania and has been in London for three months. He said “The shelter has really helped me, everyone is good here and I am very thankful.”

Katherine from Alyth commented that “It is characteristic of Alyth members to take an active role in helping our local community and it is wonderful to be able do so in Golders Green Parish Church, such a warm and welcoming place on a cold and rainy night.”

Vicar of Golders Green Parish Church, the Reverend Rex Morton said “We have been working together with Alyth for four years now and it is a great joy for both communities to come together and work as friends serving this vital need within our local community.”
