At last we are fitting the new Bimah. Planned over several years we are now ready to install the wonderful new fixture this December. There are two meetings to show the new designs and to hear all about the project: Thursday 2nd September at 8-9:30pm and, with the architect, on Sunday 5th September at 10.30-11:30am . Everyone is welcome. In addition, plans will be ready for viewing in the Tent over the High Holy Days and then afterwards, here at Alyth. Any comments can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
There are many reasons why our nearly 60 year old Bimah is being replaced. These include that over the years our services have become more and more participative and our current Bimah screens the participants from the congregation. The new Bimah will be far more open and inviting. People with impaired mobility find it difficult or impossible to climb the steep stairs to our current Bimah. The new Bimah will include a ramp to make it accessible to all with dignity. The wood panels which make up our current Bimah have for some years been drawing apart, staining and cracking. The new Bimah will be made by craftsmen to be an object of excellent functionality and beauty and will be built to last! The original ideas behind the design were shared and discussed by many members of the shul at an open forum at Alyth back in March 2008.
